Commonwealth Games place for young judo star
Beverley schoolgirl Holly Bentham (pictured) is part of a 74-strong Team England squad taking part in the Commonwealth Youth Games, which starts next week (19th July) in The Bahamas.
Holly, 17, a sixth former at Longcroft School is part of the seven-strong judo team, along with Sian Bobrowska, of Worcester, Leah Grosvenor, of Stourport-on-Severn, Thomas Lish, of Abbots Langley, Lachlan Moorhead, of Pennistone, Harry Zain Prosser, of Surbiton, and Imogen Ranner, of Foxton. This will be the first time Commonwealth Youth Games to have judo as one of its sports.
The games take place from 19th to 23rd July and the young athletes will be following in the footsteps of Team England and Olympic heroes Jessica Ennis-Hill, Beth Tweddle, James de Gale and Danny Care in representing England at the Commonwealth Youth Games
It was just a year ago that Holly was crowned British School’s Judo Champion at the English Institute of Sport in Sheffield. Holly, who trains at the East Yorkshire Judo Academy which is based at Beverley Leisure Centre and is sponsored by Coles the Solicitors, was fighting in the under 70kg category against tough opposition.
