LOCAL FOOTBALL: Beverley Reserves go top after tough away victory
North Cave 1 – 2 Beverley Town Reserves 2 (Saturday January 27)
Beverley Town reserves travelled to East Riding County League Premier Division leaders North Cave knowing only victory would keep their title hopes alive.
Town started the game strongly and forced the Cave keeper into three great saves to deny Foster, Northen and Gibson. Then, against the run of play, Cave took the lead after a dubious offside decision was allowed to go and then the striker dived to win a penalty with the referee struggling to keep up with play. Town players, obviously frustrated, picked up needless bookings, but eventually the striker calmly slotted the ball home to give the home side a 1-0 half-time lead.
Beverley manager Grady had to refocus his side during the break, plus was forced to make a change with Mike Dixon havingpicked up a knock. He was replaced by Josh Davies.
Town came out fighting and showed great team spirit and determination to turn the game on its head. They equalised through “silver fox” Adam Foster, who nodded home after a quality ball in from Shaun Gibson.
With the bit between their teeth, Beverley were turning the screw. And shortly after, Town took the lead through top scorer and star man Rob Northen after good link up play between Ben Thompson, Shaun Gibson and Matty Dixon put Northen through to round the keeper and tap into the empty net 2-1.
With 20 minutes remaining, Town were reduced to 10 men when Matty Dixon picked up a second yellow to get his marching orders. Cave threw the kitchen sink at Town,. who held firm – Josh Davies, Steve Graham and Ben Richardson repelling all attempts.
This was a fantastic performance from all the players who showed great team spirit and determination to achieve victory. Special mention to Ben Richardson who seems to get better game by game and has a bright future ahead of himself in the game. Beverley now lead the table b y three poin, but Cave do have two games in hand.
Next week, Beverley Town Reserves are at home on. the Longcroft 3G pitch against LIV Supplies Reserves (2pm kick-off)
