Beverley Athletic Club – 8th June 2021

The Wolds Way Relay has become a regular fixture in the Club’s calendar and took place on Sunday 30 May with 11 teams from local running clubs taking part. Teams tackled the challenging 90 miles Yorkshire Wolds Way in teams of 9 runners starting on the Foreshore at Hessle and finishing at Filey. In a dramatic finish on Filey Brigg, only 12 seconds separated the winning team from Caistor Running Club from the gallant runners up from City of Hull after almost 10 hours of running. The winning time of 9:49:14 is a course record for this event. A close finish for 3rd position also emerged as Wolds Veterans caught up with one of the two Beverley AC teams on the promenade to win that battle. Every team were winners however and despite some navigational issues, all teams arrived safely in Filey to collect their winnings of beer and chocolate. A big thank you to Jayne Dale and Andy Tate for organizing the event!

Ongoing personal challenges are now regular features as actual rather than virtual events now take place. Recent results include the Lakes Trail Pursuit 10k, a 13k Lakeland trail event: Steve Walker – 1:06:44; Laura Emms – 1:54:26 and Anna Pugson – 1:54:39. Brian Young completed the Coniston trail marathon in a time of 5:16:10. The Boston (Lincs) Running Festival had members completing the marathon – Jackie Hardman – 4:16:09 (1st V65) and James Durham – 4:34:24 and the half marathon – Ken Pearson – 1:49:55 and Sarah Pearson – 2:22:30.   In the Southwest, Peter Garrett completed the Downs and Around Ultra in 6:10:21.

A special mention and congratulations to Lucy Stamford who completed the Hardmoors 110, a gruelling North Yorkshire ultra-trail race of 110 miles, completing the entire Cleveland Way from Filey to Helmsley. There is a 36-hour time limit for competitors who generally will not sleep at all but press on towards the finish. Lucy commented on her experience:

“I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of the race, as the route is stunning, and the weather was superb. I’ve wanted to do the race for a long time so it was a dream come true to finish it in 31 hours, which would not have been possible without my brilliant support crew.”

Entries are now open for Specsavers Walkington 10k and the fun run! This event will take place on the evening of Friday 9th July. Always an extremely popular event, you can read more about the event and enter on the Beverley AC website – www.beverleyathleticclub.co.uk
