Best-selling author coming to Beverley
Best-selling author John Connolly is coming to Beverley to tell the hidden story behind half of Hollywood’s most iconic comedy duo. John, best know for his popular Charlie Parker thriller series, will be at the Parkway Cinema on September the 8th to talk about his latest book, “He”, which tells the extraordinary story of Stan Laurel. The event will also include the screening of a Laurel and Hardy short film, ‘The Music Box’.
He is about a man who knew both adoration and humiliation; who loved, and was loved in turn; who betrayed, and was betrayed; who never sought to cause pain to others, yet left a trail of affairs and broken marriages in his wake. John told Beverley FM: “I am of a generation that grew up with Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy as part of their lives.
Because of the roles they played, I think there is a tendency to sentimentalise them, and confuse the artistry with the reality. But they both led complicated, adult existences with their share of trauma and tragedy. What sustained them, I think, was their loyalty to each other, which grew deeper as the years passed.”
John’s visit is part of this year’s Lit Up Festival, which takes place from 28th September to 21st October. The full programme can now be viewed on the website www.litup.org.uk and tickets will go on sale on Tuesday, 29 August.
