Armthorpe Welfare 0-3 North Ferriby

North Ferriby FC put in a fine second-half performance to overcome Armthorpe Welfare. It was a victory that, coupled alongside a defeat for Rossington Main put the Villagers top of the NCEL Division one table.

The first half was very scrappy with few chances to be written about. Jamie Forrester unleashed a shot from a good distance that went over the bar without really testing Leverton in the Armthorpe goal. Matty Plummer nearly got to the end of a good cross from Josh Dennett, but an Armthorpe defender beat him to the ball. Good work from Skipper Niall Tilsley, who made a run into a threatening area found Josh Whiteley on the left-hand side but his shot was saved low at the front post.

The second half was much more entertaining with the Villagers taking control of the game. The Villagers were much more threatening, especially out wide. It was a foul on Danny Emerton inside the penalty area that led to the first chance for the Villagers to take the lead. Up stepped Danny East who slotted the ball to the goalkeeper’s left and put Ferriby ahead.

Jordan Douglas was called upon not long after and saved well from a shot on an angle that was the first sign of any danger posed by the hosts. The Villagers went in search of their second and a great delivery from Jamie Forrester from a corner saw Niall Tilsley outjump everyone but his header went over the bar.

The Villagers thought they had made it 2-0 when Danny East nodded home from close range. However, the linesman raised his flag very late to deny a goal. The chance came about after brilliant football from Louis Kirk and Jamie Forrester.

The Villagers remained undeterred and finally got their deserved second when a corner from Jamie Forrester was flicked on and the ball fell to Matty Plummer on the backpost who fired past Leverton. It would be 3-0 on the 89th minute when a brilliant run into the box by the impressive Josh Whiteley allowed the striker to pull the ball across to substitute Tom Corner at the backpost. Corner slammed his shot off the underside of the bar and the ball went over the line to give the Villagers a comprehensive win over their hosts.

North Ferriby manager Chris Bolder summed up his thoughts of his sides victory, “Fantastic performance today at a difficult place to play, it was a team that up until today had the most clean sheets in the league so we knew that they were going to be resolute and organised. The swirling wind made it extra difficult but we particularly excellent in the second half”. When talking about his sides defensive efforts Bolder followed on with, “We try and pride ourselves on clean sheets and our defensive structure. If you get that right you always put yourself in good positions to win games of football. Right at the end when balls came long from the goalkeeper we were determined to keep a clean sheet”.
