The organisers of Beverley’s popular Parkrun are waiting anxiously for a decision from East Riding Council about allowing the Westwood to be used again as the venue.

The free, five-kilometre parkruns were suspended around the world in March last year as a result of the pandemic. The national governing body has now written to all landowners in the UK for permission to re-start from Saturday 5th June. Already, the go-ahead’s been given for the run at West Park in Goole, one of 76 around the country so far. There’s concern that if the majority of courses can’t re-open on the 5th, some events will be overwhelmed with participants. To avoid that risk, the organisers may delay the re-start.

A new plaque on a house in Beverley aims to give equal recognition to the wife of artist Fred Elwell. His name adorned the plaque at Bar House, close to North Bar. But heritage experts at Beverley Civic Society wanted to see his wife Mary given her place in history as a painter, and they funded a replacement. Some of Mary’s work is on display at the town’s art gallery and are on the Beverley Elwell Trail, which was extended in December last year.
